WHAT IS SUSTAINABLE TOURISM?

Sustainable Tourism is tourism that strives to minimize its impact on the environment, to respect local people and cultures, to offer economic benefit to local businesses and communities, and to provide a memorable experience for travellers and protects destinations for future generations. Using small-scale lodging, local transportation, supporting locally-owned businesses, and incorporating community-based ecotourism projects into tours are some ways travel can work towards sustainability.

UN-World Tourism Organization (UN-WTO) provides a conceptual guide for the sustainable development of all tourism: “Sustainable tourism development guidelines and management practices are applicable to all forms of tourism in all types of destinations, including mass tourism and the various niche tourism segments. Sustainability principles refer to the environmental, economic and socio-cultural aspects of tourism development, and a suitable balance must be established between these three dimensions to guarantee its long-term sustainability."

China Luxury Travel Network endorses the Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria, an international initiative to create a common understanding of sustainable tourism. Four main themes drive the criteria: effective sustainability planning; maximizing social and economic benefits for the local community; enhancing cultural heritage; and reducing negative impacts to the environment. To learn more or download the criteria go to the Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria website.

WHAT CLTN SAYS?

The CLTN’s mission is to educate, engage, and evaluate, which is internally referred to as “The 3 E’s.” The CLTN acts in accordance to the suggestions provided by its advisory board, which is comprised of international and local experts in the travel and sustainability fields.

EDUCATE
The benefits, methods, and previous successful examples of sustainable compliance are out there, but have, in large part, yet to reach the people. A large portion of CLTN’s work is comprised of translating available information pertaining to sustainable tourism into Chinese, conducting workshops, and providing online tutorials and information accessibility.

ENGAGE
There is no better way to promote the benefits of compliance than to lead by example. The CLTN has commenced a number of projects aimed at demonstrating the positive effect of enacting sustainable processes to a variety of tourism related activities. Through our work, CLTN aims to demonstrate that traveling or doing business in a sustainable manner is not only beneficial for the greater good of a region’s inhabitants and environment, but is also a profitable and wise business strategy.

EVALUATE
Due to the diverse makeup of sustainable criterion set forth by numerous reputable international organizations, coupled with the underdeveloped nature of the Chinese tourism industry, the reality of bringing round the Chinese tourism trade entirely is unrealistic. As a result, a principle duty of the CLTN is to serve as an arbitrator in regards to sustainable compliance. For the first time, the CLTN has created a unified system of assessment that takes into consideration the vagaries of the Chinese reality, in order to reward those who are already in compliance, as well as those who are taking steps in the right direction.
